Creating a single install package for a plugin that works on Joomla 1.0, 1.5, 1.6, and beyond

I wanted to create a plugin which runs on ALL versions of Joomla........ from 1.0 to 1.6. Rather than maintain and distritube 3 separate install packages........ I wanted to create a single install package that would work on all 3 versions of the CMS.
